In a historic turn of events, Leonard Peltier, the Indigenous rights activist and member of the American Indian Movement (AIM), has been released from federal custody after nearly 50 years of imprisonment. The announcement, confirmed today by the Bureau of Prisons, marks the end of one of the most controversial and politically charged cases in modern U.S. history.

Peltier, now 80 years old, was convicted in 1977 for the deaths of two FBI agents during a 1975 confrontation on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. His trial and subsequent imprisonment have long been the subject of international human rights campaigns, with activists, legal experts, and global leaders questioning the fairness of his prosecution and calling for clemency.

“I am overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude,” said Peltier in a statement released through his legal team. “After decades of fighting for my freedom, I can finally walk on my own land, breathe free air, and be with my loved ones. I am deeply thankful to everyone who stood by me over these long years.”

Human rights organizations, tribal nations, artists, and political leaders from around the world have rallied for Peltier’s release, including Amnesty International, the United Nations, Pope Francis, and former President Jimmy Carter, who described his imprisonment as “a moral and legal tragedy.”

Today’s release is widely seen as a victory for justice and Indigenous rights. “This moment is not only about the freedom of one man,” said Tara Eaglewoman, executive director of Native Voices United. “It is about the resilience of Indigenous peoples, the importance of truth, and the power of solidarity.”

Peltier plans to return to the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians in North Dakota, where he will focus on healing, reconnecting with his community, and continuing to advocate for Native rights.

Further details about upcoming public appearances and statements from Peltier's legal team and supporters will be announced in the coming days.
